Great advice! Engaging is good, what worries me is when I see people engaging in a public battle. I just want to shout 'don't do it!' Once you start throwing bricks back then you'll find it is your windows that get broken. I think that some people find it hard to get the balance between engaging/responding and retaliating!

[...] The Radian6 Blog is absolutely worthwhile.
Great advice Lauren! Engaging with the critic also gives you the best chance for removing or modifying the bad review. Some clients ask me for help in removing critical reviews from the Web, but depending on the site, that's likely to be difficult to impossible to achieve. Far better to reach out to the dissatisfied customer in an effort to turn criticism into praise.

An interesting approach - when people deride you, respond as a true Jedi would. It's very good advice! Thanks for writing this.

I think my problem is that when I am dealing with angst, instead of hearing Yoda's voice in my head I tend to hear Chewbacca's instead. ;)

Arik,

Love that quote too! It was on my list of Yoda'isms to incorporate into this post, but did not fit it in...I will have to pocket that quote for later use.

I have personal experience with this, as most bloggers do. My best piece of advice? Take a timeout upon reading the negative comment. Don't respond right away. Breathe. And think about a thoughtful response. The "thank you" idea is right on--and that's exactly what I've done. In some cases, it's opened up a productive conversation. In others, it's went nowhere. But, it demonstrated that I'm listening--to all the comments. And, quite frankly, sometimes the negative comments lead to a more productive discussion in the long run.

By the way, Lauren, my favorite Yoda quote: "Do or do not. There is no try." Very appropriate for the world we live in, don't you think?

Barry,

That is great advice. In fact, I am working on a post right now to be published soon addressing such a process and how it assists the community team.
